RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin has reached a tentative agreement with the parent company of the NBA’s Washington Wizards and NHL’s Washington Capitals to move those teams from the District of Columbia to what he called a new “visionary sports and entertainment venue” in northern Virginia. The proposal, which would need the state legislature’s approval, calls for the creation of a $2 billion sports and entertainment district south of Washington in Alexandria, just miles from the existing arena, Youngkin said in an interview with The Associated Press ahead of a news conference planned at the site. It would include not only an arena for the basketball and hockey teams but also a new Wizards practice facility, a separate performing arts center, a media studio, new hotels, a convention center, housing and shopping, he said. “The Commonwealth will now be home to two professional sports teams, a new corporate headquarters, and over 30,000 new jobs – this is monumen...Stock market today: Wall Street ticks slightly higher ahead of Fed call on interest rates

Wall Street inched up modestly Wednesday ahead a decision by the U.S. Federal Reserve on interest rates.Futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones industrials each rose about 0.1% before the opening bell.On Tuesday, the S&P 500 climbed to its highest level since early 2022, slightly below its record high, after a report showed inflation in the United States is behaving pretty much as expected. That has reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve will stand pat on interest rates when it announces its next move Wednesday afternoon. The inflation report showed U.S. consumers paid prices for gasoline, food and other living costs last month that were 3.1% higher overall than a year earlier, slightly below October’s 3.2% inflation and exactly in line with economists’ expectations. The Fed has already yanked its main interest rate from virtually zero early last year to more than 5.25%, its highest level since 2001. It’s hoping to slow the economy and hurt investment prices by ex...Sancionan a atleta estudiantil transgénero y a una escuela secundaria por dejarla participar en equipo femenino

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it will hear an appeal that could upend hundreds of charges stemming from the Capitol riot, including against former President Donald Trump. The justices will review an appellate ruling that revived a charge against three defendants accused of obstruction of an official proceeding. The charge refers to the disruption of Congress’ certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election victory over Trump. That’s among four counts brought against Trump in special counsel Jack Smith’s case that accuses the 2024 Republican presidential primary front-runner of conspiring to overturn the results of his election loss. Trump is also charged with conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding. The court’s decision to weigh in on the obstruction charge could threaten the start of Trump’s trial, currently scheduled for March 4. A group of students brutally attacked one individual near Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, leaving the victim hospitalized. The assault reportedly occurred after school hours at North Community Park, adjacent to the school, in a side parking lot used by students. Video footage of the attack showed a teenager carry the victim over his shoulder before throwing him, head first, on the concrete. The victim appeared unconscious after he landed on the street.According to a tweet from Chris Nelson, a Fort Lauderdale reporter, Coral Springs Police responded to the incident. Despite the off-campus location, the victim is an MSD student. A friend of the victim said 15 people chased after him before the assault. “I was there when they started chasing him, but when I left, he was in an ambulance,” recalled the young man. “I heard that he fractured his skull. An overnight water main break in Brockton sent water flowing down Montello Street and forced crews to close part of Route 28 to make repairs.Officials with the Brockton Department of Public Works said the break happened around 1 a.m. on Wednesday and involved a pipe that was believed to be around 100 years old.Water access for hundreds of residents was shut down as crews began repair work, with DPW crews seen tearing up asphalt and cleaning up the roadway throughout the morning.“Right now, we probably have about 200 or 300 customers impacted, about a mile of pipe is shut off – but it’s only the pipe on the main road, it’s not any of the side streets,” said Commissioner of Brockton Public Works Patrick Hill.A portion of Route 28, from Lawrence Street to Allen Street, was closed as crews continued to work.Officials estimated the work would likely go on through the rest of the morning and into the afternoon, with the Brockton DPW stating water service may ...Latest news
