HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders released defensive end Chandler Jones on Saturday, ending a tumultuous final month with the club in which he lashed out several times on social media. The Raiders’ decision to release Jones, who had been on the non-football illness list, came one day after he was arrested by Las Vegas police for allegedly violating a domestic violence temporary protection order. He’s scheduled to appear in court Dec. 4. Las Vegas also placed linebacker Curtis Bolton (knee) on injured reserve, meaning he must miss at least next four games. Linebacker Kana’i Mauga was signed to the active roster, and cornerback Tyler Hall and linebacker Malik Reed were activated off the practice squad.Jones’ issues with the Raiders first surfaced shortly before Las Vegas’ season opener on Sept. 10 at Denver when he accused the team of locking him out of the facility. He was especially critical of coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler. This week, Jo...McCloud throws 3 TD passes, James Madison holds on to beat South Alabama 31-23

HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) — Jordan McCloud threw three touchdown passes — two to Zach Horton — and Jalen Green returned an interception 24 yards for a TD to help James Madison beat South Alabama 31-23 on Saturday. Horton scored on a 66-yard catch-and-run to give James Madison (5-0, 2-0 Sun Belt Conference) a 31-7 lead with 11:32 remaining. The Jaguars responded with a nine-play 75-yard drive that culminated with a Carter Bradley’s 3-yard TD pass to Lincoln Sefcik about 3 minutes later and, after a JMU punt, La’Damian Webb scored on a 1-yard run to cut the deficit to 31-23 with 3:56 to play. The Dukes went three-and-out but the defense quickly erased any doubt about the outcome. After an incomplete pass on first down, Aiden Fisher tackled Webb in the backfield and then Green – whose pick-6 made it 24-7 at halftime — sacked Bradley to make it fourth-and-26 with before Francis Meehan picked off a pass in the closing seconds to seal it.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Cade Klubnik threw two touchdown passes and Clemson’s high-powered defense made a statement on Saturday in a dominant 31-14 victory against previously unbeaten Syracuse. The Tigers (3-2, 1-2 ACC) sacked Syracuse quarterback Garrett Shrader five times, picked him off once, and forced three fumbles. They recovered two of those fumbles, the first of which came on the Orange’s opening drive.“We won the line of scrimmage,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. “I mean, we did a heck of a job up front. I think we won the matchups up front and created some disruption and we challenged them. We forced the issue.”On the first drive, Shrader took off for a 19-yard dash, but was hit hard and lost the ball. It was recovered by Clemson’s Payton Page at the Tigers’ 45-yard line. Clemson was initially called for a targeting penalty on the hit but after a review it was overturned.“I just saw it clean,” Swinney said. “And it looked worse than it was because (Shrader) didn’t see him c...Lionel Messi misses another Inter Miami match with leg injury

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Here’s how it goes for Inter Miami right now when it comes to the injured Lionel Messi: The team keeps saying he might play, and then he doesn’t play. That pattern held true again Saturday, when the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was scratched from the lineup for a matchup against New York City FC — a game with significant Major League Soccer playoff implications for both clubs. Messi has a leg injury, the severity of which has not been revealed by Inter Miami. The team announced that Messi would not play about 45 minutes before Saturday’s game time. The 36-year-old superstar has now missed four of Inter Miami’s last five matches, plus another for Argentina in that span because of what was first called fatigue — by both his club and country — and has evolved from there. The only game he didn’t miss during that stretch was a 37-minute appearance against Toronto on Sept. 20, and he had to leave that match before halftime because of what is believed to be...A parasite was found in a Baltimore reservoir and vulnerable residents should take precautions

(CNN) — A microscopic parasite was detected in the Druid Lake Reservoir in Baltimore, and vulnerable residents are being told to take precautions when drinking water.Traces of Cryptosporidium were found in the lake during a routine test by the Baltimore City Department of Public Works crew members.Cryptosporidium is a microorganism that can cause gastrointestinal problems, including diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and stomach pain, according to a public works press release.Children, the elderly, and those with an immunocompromising condition are more likely to experience these symptoms if exposed to the parasite.“People with healthy immune systems typically are not impacted or quickly recover without medical treatment,” the release noted. This microorganism discovery only affects the water systems in Baltimore City and Baltimore and Howard counties in Maryland. While Cryptosporidium poses potential health issues, the levels that were detected indicated “low risk for the general public” and...Liberals lead in Slovakia election, exit poll shows

Liberal, Western-oriented Progressive Slovakia was leading Slovakia’s election on Saturday, followed by the leftist-populist Smer opposition party, an exit poll indicated. Progressive Slovakia, led by former journalist and Oxford grad Michal Šimečka, had 23.5 percent of the vote, followed by former Prime Minister Robert Fico’s Smer with 21.9 percent, the exit poll from the Focus agency and the TV station Markíza showed shortly after balloting closed at 10:45 p.m. CET.By political custom in Slovakia, the front-runner gets the first chance at forming a majority in the 150-seat parliament. With the country profoundly polarized, that rule theoretically puts Šimečka in a strong position to form a coalition for what would be his first term as prime minister, if he can find enough allies in conservative Slovakia willing to work with him and his LGBT+ platform.Saturday’s ballot is seen as pivotal to Slovakia’s future, with Fico having promised to stop sending weapons to Ukraine, to bl...Connor boots go-ahead field goal to cap Castellanos-led rally in Boston College’s win over Virginia

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — Voters in Slovakia cast ballots Saturday in early parliamentary elections, and two exit polls pointed to a tight finish between a liberal, pro-West newcomer and a populist former prime minister who campaigned on a pro-Russia and anti-American message. The polls by the Focus and Median SK agencies gave a slight edge to the Progressive Slovakia party, saying it could capture between 20% and 23.5% of the vote. Former Prime Minister Robert Fico and his leftist Smer, or Direction, party appeared headed to getting between 19% and 22%, the polls indicated.Official results were not expected until Sunday. The election was a test for the small eastern European country’s support for neighboring Ukraine in its war with Russia, and a win by Fico could strain a fragile unity in the European Union and NATO.Fico, 59, vowed to withdraw Slovakia’s military support for Ukraine in Russia’s war if his attempt to return to power succeeded.Michal Simecka, a 39-year-old memb...Quebec seeks to join class-action lawsuit against opioid manufacturers, distributors

QUEBEC — The Quebec government intends to table a bill in the coming days to enable it to join a class action lawsuit brought by British Columbia against more than 40 pharmaceutical companies accused of downplaying the harmful effects of opioids. A source familiar with the file confirmed the information to The Canadian Press. The British Columbia lawsuit dates to 2018 and alleges manufacturers both misrepresented the risk of addiction to opioids and failed to mention side effects and withdrawal symptoms. It also accuses distributors of allowing opioids to flood the market, contributing to the nationwide addiction crisis. The province passed a law — the “Opioid Damages and Health Care Costs Recovery Act” — empowering it to pursue class actions on behalf of the federal government and other provincial governments.Quebec, Yukon and Nunavut are the only province and territories without similar legislation, which also makes it possible for their governments to join class action ...Latest news
