T.J. Maxx, a discount retailer and one of the last remaining department stores in St. Paul’s Midway neighborhood, will close its location at 1410 University Ave. W. permanently on Oct. 8, capping 10 years at the site, according to an announcement posted at the shop entrance. The clothing and home goods retailer — located in the Midway Marketplace strip mall anchored by a Cub Foods grocery — opened in October 2013. Decades ago, the area was a prime destination for shopping, car sales, hotels and even dancing and proms. The last decade has been a difficult one for retail in general, given the advent of online shopping in the “Amazon era,” a pandemic that led to widespread lockdowns for restaurants and retailers, and the May 2020 riots and property damage that followed the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis.Courtney Igbo of St. Paul sweeps up debris at the T.J. Opinion: Perfection cannot be the standard for (re)naming efforts in Colorado

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 05:56:04 GMT

Toward the end of the movie Oppenheimer, President Harry S. Truman accuses the title character of being a “cry baby scientist.” The comment, true to history though it was said privately to staff, so completely diminishes the brilliant physicist’s anguish over the detonation of the first atomic bombs that he helped create. If that’s all the viewer knows of that president, one would think Truman a small man who lacked empathy for Oppenheimer and the more than 214,000 people who died from the blasts by 1945. Yet Truman was anything but; he oversaw the Marshall Plan, the Berlin Airlift, and the desegregation of the U.S. Armed Forces. When viewed in the context of their life and times, it is clear that both men’s contributions to history were far greater than their failings. A single moment does not a person define. The Denver Agency for Human Rights and Community Partnerships and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, which just renamed Mt. Evans to Mt. Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 05:56:04 GMT

Heading into a short week, expect coach 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan to throttle back on his use of do-everything running back Christian McCaffrey.McCaffrey rushed for 116 yards on 20 carries with a 14-yard touchdown run in a 30-23 road win over the Los Angeles Rams, piggy-backing off his 152-yard performance against Pittsburgh in Week 1. He also caught three passes for 19 yards. After playing all 57 snaps against the Rams, McCaffrey has been off the field for only 10 plays through two games — having played 58 of 68 snaps against the Steelers in the opener. He leads the NFL with 268 yards rushing and averaging 6.4 yards per carry.Shanahan had some regret about McCaffrey going wire-to-wire against the Rams, with Elijah Mitchell not playing at all after getting 10 snaps against the Steelers. Getting McCaffrey a rushing title isn’t a priority as much as having him upright deep into the season.“We’ve definitely got to get Elijah in there more and do better with our r...
